Early Childhood
Early Childhood Programs
Our Seminole Campus offers classes for junior kindergarten and kindergarten; our St. Petersburg Campus offers classes for kindergarten.

Our students enrich their understanding and appreciation of the world around them by attending a variety of field trips. Some of these exciting field trips include the public library, post office, aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, the Pinellas County Science Center, Lowry Park Zoo, Ruth Eckerd Hall, and the Mahaffey Theater. Our students also benefit from outside organizations bringing their presentations to our school, such as the American Stage Theater Company, the fire department, Kangaroo Mick, and the All Children’s Hospital, as well as our own middle school performing arts students and band.

Junior Kindergarten
You want your child’s first school experience to be, in a word, wonderful…. so do we… The early childhood teachers at Wellington School will help to instill in your child a life-long love of learning.

Our youngest students are encouraged to express themselves both verbally and artistically. We help these students develop positive attitudes toward school through daily routines to help build good habits, self-discipline, and self-esteem. We believe children learn best through actively participating in a variety of learning experiences.

Math is a multi-sensory, hands-on experience where children work with manipulatives to learn concepts such as patterning, grouping, classifying and measuring. Letter and sound relationships are introduced through lovable puppets in language arts. Literary appreciation, reading readiness, oral language and vocabulary are also enhanced. Our social studies program familiarizes students with self-awareness as well as customs and traditions from our country and around the world. Through hands-on science activities, children discover outcomes through experimentation.

In addition to their everyday classroom activities, our youngest students benefit from regularly scheduled enrichment classes including music, Spanish, computer science, library and physical education, all taught by specialists in their field.

Kindergarten
Hands-on experiences continue this year, and learning is transferred to written work. Projects and activities enrich the academic program and encourage the development of the love of learning. Weekly homework assignments are introduced, and students are able to earn the right to join the Wellington Book Club.

A daily math meeting provides a comfortable routine where children practice skills related to time, temperature, money, sequencing, graphing, and problem solving. Math concepts are developed through group experiences and are practiced through the daily math lesson. Language arts expands into the exciting world of reading and writing as the children continue to enjoy books and create their own stories. Phonetic skills, early literacy, reading comprehension, and writing strategies are developed through our balanced curriculum. Kindergarten students participate in the Wellington School Book Club, a reading enrichment program that leads students to a love of reading. The value and importance of reading is continually promoted, with students sharing their favorite books through creative projects and book reports. Students who achieve 25 book club points are awarded a tee-shirt and a special luncheon held in their honor. Wellington students most assuredly are the "smart, the proud, the well-read."

Science and social studies are taught through thematic units, such as community field trips, nature exploration, gardening, and cooking to expand the children’s understanding of their world. Music progresses to vocal and instrumental instruction. Spanish class continues to develop conversational skills with a weekly puppet show. Computer skills are expanded through the use of the keyboard and mouse. In physical education, we emphasize cooperation and fair play. Gross and fine motor skills are developed through basic exploration and body movement.
