Technology is a great resource now and in the future for each of our Wellington Students. At Wellington, students visit the computer lab two times a week for 40 minute lessons. While building on what they are learning in our primary classrooms, we also stretch our curriculum by using technology to help guide them through the virtual world.
By using interactive phonics software and beginning typing software for our Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students, it helps them with their small motor skills, mouse skills and proper hand formation in their early years. We also begin building on those skills as we graduate from grade to grade working on internet research projects as early as 3rd Grade, Power point projects in 3rd Grade and even Excel spreadsheets in 4th Grade.
In Fourth grade, students continue working in Word. Students learn to format text, add bullets and borders, insert and edit pictures, and insert word art. Students are introduced to Power Point where they will learn to format text, work with slide views, and insert pictures. Students are also introduced to Excel where they learn to create and edit different types of charts. Typing proficiency is continued. Skills needed to navigate the Internet for research and projects are also continued.
In Fifth grade students learn how to customize the page layout, adjust paragraph spacing, align paragraphs, and customize printing in Word. Through Power Point, students learn to customize slide structure and insert and delete slides. In Excel, students learn to create and edit charts. Typing proficiency is continued. Skills needed to navigate the Internet for research and projects are also continued
In our Middle School program a more accelerated typing program is used with proficiencies individualized to meet the student’s needs. Students continue to integrate Word into all assignments using a variety of tools, styles, and insertions. Through Excel, students learn more about moving around a worksheet, inserting formulas, amending row and column sizes, changing fonts and styles, and how to use the Formulas Evaluator. In PowerPoint, students learn about color schemes and design templates. They learn how to move through a presentation, how to insert pictures, how to insert movies and sound, and how to set the timing. Students are also introduced to HTML, where they will be instructed on how to create a webpage.
Safety is what is most important when using technology with students so Wellington uses a fully protected network throughout out our campus.
