The Primary Program

Our acclaimed primary program, which includes grades one through three, helps children develop academically, socially, and morally. Hands-on experiences are emphasized as well as written work and research.

Our morning assemblies have become a unique tradition at Wellington School. They are held three times a week and bring our school community together to help students develop self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills and character. Each day student speakers lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance and patriotic musical performances. Some days, individual, small group or entire classes perform musically, dramatically, or to present an academic project. Student achievements are recognized for classroom accomplishments, outside academic competitions, and community service. Time is spent discussing the "Theme for the Month" or "Quote" which relate to setting goals and having an "I Can" attitude. Many parents attend these 15-minute daily assemblies and get their daily dose of inspiration as well.
Our students enrich their understanding and appreciation of the world around them by attending a variety of field trips. Some of these exciting field trips include the public library, post office, aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, the Pinellas County Science Center, Lowry Park Zoo, Ruth Eckerd Hall, and the Mahaffey Theater. Our students also benefit from outside organizations bringing their presentations to our school, such as American Stage, the fire department, Kangaroo Mick, PARC Drug Prevention Puppet Show and the All Children’s Hospital, as well as our own middle school performing arts students and band.

An eclectic teaching methodology is used in math, providing students with the confidence and ability to solve everyday mathematical problems. Application and review of critical and analytical thinking skills are the hallmark of our math curriculum. Our integrated language arts curriculum includes reading, writing, spelling, phonics, English, public speaking, and penmanship. Research skills and report writing are developed through teacher-guided research projects in second and third grades. Students participate in the Wellington Book Club, a reading enrichment program that leads to a love of reading. The value and importance of reading is continually promoted, with students sharing their favorite books through creative projects and book reports. Students who achieve 50 book club points are awarded a tee-shirt and a special luncheon held in their honor. Wellington students most assuredly are the "smart, the proud, the well-read." Textbook lessons in social studies come to life with field trips and creative projects as we prepare the students to become citizens of a global society. They investigate the natural world in science and apply the scientific method through experiments and interactive projects.

Because there exists a direct link between art and academics, formalized art instruction begins in first grade as students are introduced to many mediums that tap into their creativity via drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. A variety of musical experiences motivate and encourage an appreciation and enjoyment of all facets of music. Computer skills expand through keyboarding, Internet research, and word processing composition. In physical education, coordination, stamina, and body awareness are increased through various sports, with an emphasis on good sportsmanship.
